Monument 03:13
Wake up and put your uniform on Hardshelled hat and heavy duty gloves And please be careful out there, darlin’ Building bridges is a brave man’s work You know one day you’ll be in history People will walk upon the steel you mold Things like these they just don’t fall apart No matter how fragile and how old And our children will carry on What you started here today And I know everyone involved Will have nothing but good things to say About the monument We built for them Don’t worry there, it’s an easy job And I’ll be home before you know All I need is my kerosene torch With your love I can’t go wrong Where I stand I see the sun come up Across the water it fills my soul I tell you, dear, the bridge is strong And someday you’ll see what I saw And our children will carry on What you started here today And I know everyone involved Will have nothing but good things to say About the monument We built for them About The monument We built for them

Woke up this mornin’ and you weren’t around Somebody told me that they tore you down And there ain’t no one left To cut you any slack All outta cigarettes Yeah, you’re flat broke Finally told you this was all a joke And they’re laughin’ at you Behind your back I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now Kick you down, build you up Into somethin’ you are not We could leave without a trace But I know you won’t I don’t mind If you stay I can’t help but feel this way I’m leavin’ tonight Even if you don’t I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now It’s gettin’ late now honey I’ve got to go A little whiskey and a couple more shows Crossin’ bridges and some railroad tracks The difference this time is I ain’t comin’ back I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now I wanna love you but I don’t know how I wanna change just not right now

Songbird 03:33
In a house on a hill Lived a woman who had finally learned to sit still Growing up, you couldn’t keep her feet on the ground But she found a songbird that finally settled her down Now she sits in the house and prays While the songbird’s out building bridges all day So soon they can leave the house where it is With every mile, said the songbird, I will give you a kiss From me, from me, from me, from me But she sits at the window and cries Crystals fall heavy out of the lids of her eyes Because she thinks someday she will root like a tree And when the songbird goes, she won’t be able to be With him, with him, with him, him, with him, him, him But a bridge outta sticks won’t be strong And one day soon an iron man will come along He will build a bridge strong outta steel And humble the songbird will fly away from the hill From here, from here, from here, here, from here, from here

Water Wide 03:36
I once was a noble king You remember well You never lacked for anything Until the fortune fell Fortune is a fickle friend A fickle enemy as well And heaven knew not so many leagues From the precipice of hell Don’t you leave me stranded here On the other side Won’t you lead me to your shore Over water wide All my love Water wide Water wide All my love Water wide And if you were to stay with me I would rise again And to our love I would erect An immortal monument Without a word being ever heard It would sing of all your treasures It would open wide and let inside Ships laden for your pleasure Don’t you leave me stranded here As so many have My faithful man disbanded here Left for distant lands All my love Distant lands Distant lands All my love Distant lands Don’t you leave me stranded here On the other side Won’t you lead me to your shore Over water wide All my love Water wide Water wide All my love Water wide

Found a bridge Won’t you meet me there We’re both alone Your spirit’s in the air Love’s a common ground Two heartbeats make one sound Let’s build us a bridge Stop tearing old ones down Alright Yeah I’m just a little cat Down the bridge’s gaps Whether they’re big or small It’s all perhaps Just relax While sittin’ on this bench There’s water in the trench If I could suspend To help me comprehend Thoughts from within So … Stars on the water reflectin’ Why am I still disconnectin’ Despite my intentions I’m in three dimensions Fear I’m a slave Breakin’ free is what I crave Is it possible Is it crossable Found a bridge Won’t you meet me there We’re both alone Your spirit’s in the air Love’s a common ground Two heartbeats make one sound Let’s build us a bridge Stop tearing old ones down I’ll get to that bridge no matter what I swear I’d like to take the steps across the water there Together, under the nice weather Don’t care How long it takes to meet you there The process slow But I can feel it grow So gradual When we meet up in the middle The steps start little And the strides are slow In the eye of the moon which our sight behold On this late night stroll The bridge is old But its strength we both know Without bein’ told Is it possible Is it crossable Found a bridge Won’t you meet me there We’re both alone Your spirit’s in the air Love’s a common ground Two heartbeats make one sound Let’s build us a bridge Stop tearing old ones down To get past the sea Is where I need to be Where the love is fulfilled And I know we both have the time to waste The wind is still But the chill In the air is so real I can taste If I took a minute with you To stare up there … space where the stars are ours to share To be at peace with the powers that be inside of me … right inside of me To get across must be destiny The moon starts to set … the shine of the sun Has a new day to come And I know it’s rest we’ll need But when we cross melodies The recipe And the loss of time will be replaced with endless peace of memories It is possible It is crossable Found a bridge Won’t you meet me there We’re both alone Your spirit’s in the air Love’s a common ground Two heartbeats make one sound Let’s build us a bridge Stop tearing old ones down

When I just wanna throw it all away In my ride on the way up to the bay Where the highway’s goin’ Where the wind is blowin’ Now at last I know Where I wanna go And I’m feelin’ like I’m leavin’ it all behind me And it’s all so far away All the way up here Nothin’ to remind me And I’m finally on my way Things just got so hey out of hand Need a change Everything’s just the same to me, to me But now I’m feelin’ stronger ‘Cause I’m headed for it Now it won’t be long And now I’m on my way Now I’m feelin’ like I’m leavin’ it all behind me And it’s all so far away All the way up here Nothin’ to remind me And I’m finally on my way Yeah Now I’m feelin’ like I’m leavin’ it all behind me And it’s all so far away All the way up here Nothin’ to remind me And I’m finally on my way And I’m finally on my way And I’m finally on my way And I’m finally on my way

Silver Span 03:37
The cardboard box That they made for us It is not a home Plastic beams just hold it up And tear cathedrals down Pay no mind to the wrecking ball It’s not there at all They all came just to watch it fall There’s no wrecking ball I can see silver span in the sun Can’t you see silver span in the sun There’s the suit that sold her out With a breezy smile He would trade all the time away For a nickel and a dime We’re pounding nails into the tires And the trucks stood still When they send another, we’ll do the same We hold our breath and dodge the cars Whoa We’ll jump the rail into the stars I can see silver span in the sun Can’t you see silver span in the sun Can’t you see silver span in the sun Can’t you see silver span in the sun
9.
Twirl 02:23
Stuck in my head and there’s nothing inside Don’t appear drains directly to the river and the tide and the fish and the seagulls might die From the plastic bag from the Cheetos that you’re eating What’d you say I can’t hear you there’s a Harley going by It’s gone could you tell me that again By the way you’re really cute, I like that freckle in your eye Nobody else is around And we walk through an empty downtown And I see the bridge go up and down in your eyes And we twirl And we twirl I’m heading down Michigan and turning on First I feel a burning thirst I’m in luck there are more guitars than cars in the parking lot I think it’s gonna be delicious Got a smoke No I quit a couple weeks ago That smells really good but there’s something you should know It makes me antisocial and I have to go and hide in my room by myself all alone Nobody else is around And we walk through an empty downtown And I see the bridge go up and down in your eyes And we twirl And we twirl La la la la la la Nobody else is around And we walk through an empty downtown And I see the bridge go up and down in your eyes And we twirl

When you hold me, baby, I feel like a bird sittin’ in your hand And even when I don’t say nothin’, you still understand And after everything I’ve done You still tell me I’m the one But I know I’d be nothin’ if it wasn’t for my Door County girl Keep me in your world Door County girl I come home and you’re still up You know I’m feeling blue Whiskey in a coffee cup A cigarette for two We’ll walk outside, the moon is bright The steel bridge is bathed in light And I know everything’s alright When I’m with my Door County girl Keep me in your world Door County girl Keep me in your world All the pain and all the fears All the bruises and all the tears Well they just disappear Darlin’ when I hold you near And all I ever want is to be here right now Door County girl Keep me in your world Door County girl Keep me in your world Door County girl Keep me in your world Door County girl

Well I woke up this morning, the bridge was still there Thank God for small favors ‘Cause I had a dream that she’d crumbled in air Despite my best efforts to save her So I put on the coffee, I poured me a cup I read through the papers until you woke up I tried to remember when that was enough This river runs deep as it flows out to sea It cuts a fierce channel between you and me There’d be no way across, no way around Lest these bridges come down We sank our foundation a long time ago Yeah, we worked with our hands both together Laid the strongest of tires on the pillars below Thought they would last us forever But time tests the limits of the load we can bear And each rusty girder’s in need of repair The paint chips away, surface lays bare And the river runs deep as it flows out to sea It cuts a fierce channel between you and me There’d be no way across, no way around Lest these bridges come down What should we do To see this through Men were amazed Between me and you ‘Cause the river runs deep as it flows out to sea It cuts a fierce channel between you and me There’d be no way across, no way around Lest these bridges come down Comes down I woke up this morning The bridge was still there Thank heaven for small favors

Jack fell over, Jack paid rent Jack will never be president Jack was stumblin’ from his bar He never saw that police car There was nothin’ to explain He said, “I’m pissin’ in the shadows I can pick my battles There ain’t no need to gather ‘round Just give me a moment I’m losin’ my momentum Can’t you hear that gentle sound I’m makin’ music on the ground I’m not the only drunk in town” Jack was cool, Jack got cold Jack still knew his b… Jack be nimble, jack be quick But Jack can’t run, he got hit He was talkin’ to a nightstick He said, “I’m pissin’ in the shadows I can pick my battles There ain’t no need to gather ‘round Just give me a moment I’m losin’ my momentum Can’t you hear that gentle sound I’m makin’ music on the ground I’m not the only drunk in town” Pissin’ in the shadows He said, “I’m pissin’ in the shadows” Pissin’ in the shadows He said, “I’m pissin’ in the shadows” He said, “I’m pissin’ in the shadows” He said, “I’m pissin’ in the shadows” Pissin’ Pissin’

I made a promise To love and be honest To you, my sweet memory Until the age of nine I was yours and you were mine The broken boughs of others Had carried you away Now I’m the bridgetender Just hoping you remember That game we used to play Where we’d dream that we’d get married On the bow of that old ferry So I’m hoping you will find the place where we’d say our lost goodbye I’ve made a fine success here But my house up on the hill Stands as empty as my heart When my mother drove so fast that day The love we had was torn away I’ve had years of sleepless nights Rehearsing words I’d say to you So I tell the bartender All the sweet things I remember About the games we used to play That they’d raise that bridge for us Like we were so important That bridge might be the place where we could find our lost goodbye I’ve spent years With this heartache Always watching for a sign Once again you’d be mine So imagine my amazement The day your eyes returned my gaze Holy shit, I realized That I forgot your name So why did we hold on To a dream that is gone After all, we were only nine years old Even though I’m sure you’re nice I just can’t believe that I spent my life Pining over someone I don’t know So here we’ll play our final game You’ll raise that bridge, and you’ll sail away While the traffic stops and the people wave And the whistle blows for the big parade And the governor calls it a holiday And everyone stands just to hear us say Hey, it’s nice to see you Yeah, you too, take care And that’s Our last Goodbye

19.
I’ve been the mistress of the devil Ever since you came around And I’ve been in and outta trouble And it’s all around the town When you told me you’d never leave me You were nowhere to be found Now I’m standin’ on the steel bridge Lookin’ up and down here for a fight And there’s a whiskey river flowin’ Let it carry me away into the night Only a soldier can save me But there’s no soldier in sight You left me stranded on the drawbridge again I’m tryin’ to find a way but you won’t let me in If this was made of wood I’d burn the whole thing down Maybe you might notice me when I’m not around You left me stranded on the drawbridge again I’m tryin’ to find a way but you won’t let me in If this was made of wood I’d burn the whole thing down Maybe you might notice me when I’m not around So I’m the mistress of the devil And it was all part of the plan And I must stay with him forever Oh, he’s the only one who understands When I needed someone to save me Oh, he was the only one lovin’ man

So you’re the boss But you act like a baby ‘Cause you gotta have it your way And you don’t let up Half of the time You treat me like a stranger Keep puttin’ me in danger And it winds me up When you ignore what’s right You won’t even try Burn your build, build your burn Burn your build, and never learn It’s bound to break When you apply maximum weight Hey, hey yeah You’ll never change That’s the way you want it Get it ‘til you got it And it winds me up When you put up a fight And you always think you’re right Burn your build, build your burn Burn your build, and never learn It’s bound to break When you apply maximum weight Hey, hey yeah When you put up a fight And you always think you’re right Burn your build, build your burn Burn your build, and never learn It’s bound to break When you apply maximum weight Hey, hey Burn your build, build your burn Burn your build, and never learn It’s bound to break When you apply maximum weight Hey, hey yeah Hey, hey yeah Hey, hey yeah Hey, hey yeah Hey, hey

Petrified, petrified, petrified stream of seahorses More of a dream than anything Time is passing like snails Eighty years worth of weight Stark like a firefly Baby doll, baby doll, poor little child You’re cursed with the blood of … And you’re paying it off with compassion And a whole lot of regret Oh baby doll, baby doll, baby doll You never get their forgiveness No, not from them And now it’s time, now it’s time, now it’s time For you to teach them a lesson You can’t have a bridge to the ground And turn around and just build another So put away, put away, put away That fake heart you’ve been nursin’ Oh baby doll, baby doll, poor little child They curse you with the blood of … And you’re paying it off with compassion And a whole lot of regret Oh baby doll, baby doll, baby doll You never get their forgiveness No, not from them

What must I do to leave this place There’s no road that I can see No rivers, no bridges, just empty space Nothing to rescue me I’m spinning Just spinning Even gravity can’t hold me down I’m spinning Just spinning Lights in the distance Are they up or down Remember a time when I cared I’m better off drifting on my own So much safer here Spinning Just spinning Even gravity can’t hold me down I’m spinning Just spinning There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love There’s a smile on my face So sweet is the taste of love

Dreamland 04:05
Open up your jaws Take a bite out of the pain You rusted down to saw All you need’s a coat of paint A man sits in your eye Holds some coffee to his lips Eight hours every day He stares out at the ships As the sun goes round Above a sleepy town And the white birds glide Across the lake blue sky And the water falls Into a sea of gold All the stars so thick Electric Night The dawn it says a prayer Pats you on the nose Your palms are pointing in the air Then the drawbridge closed As the sun comes round Above a lonely town And the white birds glide Across the lake blue sky And the winter folds Into a spring of gold All the stars so thick Electric And the fishin’ boy Holds an empty line Dragonflies On the steel cranes Are like javelins in the midnight deep The old bridge hums The skeleton And the metal groans As the engines roll The whole wide world beyond Capsized Moondrake Fire escape Steel hull on a frozen lake Clouds align Across the ice A wedding train Winding down Into another world An underworld Something gold in a drunken world Dark is doomed Cold dark room Infra black Deep, deep, deep, deep Dreamland It’s a dreamland It’s a dreamland It’s a dreamland It’s a dreamland It’s a dreamland It’s a dreamland It’s a dreamland It’s a dream

The Sturgeon Bay Bridge has long been an object of controversy in Door County, Wisconsin, where folks either love or hate it. Time after time, the 80-year-old monstrosity has had to prove its worth to avoid the wrecking ball. Steel Bridge Songfest started celebrating its existence in 2005, and has rapidly become a new Door County tradition. Now more people seem to be loving that old bridge. The Construction Zone is a week of collaborative songwriting that coincides with the festival. Writing takes place in motel rooms, coffee shops, down by the waterside, all over town. Writers are asked to write songs using the bridge as inspiration. "The Bridge-with-a-capital-B has long been a potent metaphor in popular song," says CZ founder pat mAcdonald. "The steel drawbridge is a great symbol of strength and of joining together, the melding of diverse cultures, divergent views, the old and the new, the words and the music, the tangible and the intangible..." Steel Bridge Songfest, with its infusion of new songs written solely for the event, is truly a first-of-its-kind festival, merging forward-thinking with historic preservation. Young and old, tourists and locals, the rich and the struggling, the hip and the conservative, come together in a common cause. New bridges made of music and song save an old one made of steel. These songs bring the message, convey the fun, and immortalize the spirit of Steel Bridge Songfest. The writers and artists have all volunteered their time, energy, and creativity to this project. Proceeds and royalties will be donated to the Steel Bridge Fund held by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Thanks for your support!
