In 1884, the ship named “Joys” was built in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She enjoyed an uneventful life, hauling lumber and stone through the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal from Menominee to the ports of Milwaukee, Chicago, Maniste, and Michigan City. On December 23rd, 1898, we find Joys anchored in ice in the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal, with Captain Conelly sleeping soundly in the wheelhouse, dreaming of the greyhound of lumber carriers.
And then I saw fire
Sounded the alarm
And ran
Away
That girl was such a workhorse
Now the chaos current carries her
Away, away
Over
There, where she burned
To the waterline
To the waterline
And there she sank
Most of us
Were able, able to escape
Me and my mate
Jumped to the frozen lake
And tried to
Divert the burning hull from
Her path to the
Government house
There, where she burned
To the waterline
To the waterline
And there she sank
There, where she burned
To the waterline
To the waterline
And there she sank
The steamer Joys, which docked at Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal, burned at an early hour. The fire originated from the smokestack and burned the vessel to the water’s edge. Subsequent assessment of the damage determined her to be a total loss. Several tons of iron, mostly bolts, were taken from her hull, while the propeller wheel, shaft, rudder, and shoe were also removed. She now lies by Sunset Park on the east shore, her hull flattened and scattered by ice where she was unceremoniously abandoned.
There, where she burned
To the waterline
To the waterline
And there she sank
There, where she burned
To the waterline
To the waterline
And there she sank
There, where she burned
To the waterline
To the waterline
And there she sank
